Chapter Nineteen
âWhat? Damn it, we need to follow them. Whoâs in the pilot chair right now?â
âDivee. And he would gladly offer it up should you wish to take over.â Bathie wasnât laughing but Vas heard the tone in her voice. Divee was an odd one. He had potential, but he liked to stay in the background. He only had a piloting shift because she made him.
Normally, Vas would make him ride it out. He needed to become confident in different areas. He was an engineer and damn good at that, but her primary crew people needed to have a variety of skills. If they needed some fancy flying right now though, he wasnât going to be the one to do it.
âIâm on my way. Keep an eye on them and drop all external tech except for Gostaâs sensors.â Starships were always sending out sensing signals, usually low-level ones that couldnât be detected. But there were ways to expose them. Gosta had added the method to do so to the Warrior Wench a few months agoâhe also did so to this ship first thing.
âAye, Captain, they appear to be slowing down near a smallish moon on the edge of this system. The analysis of this entire system said it was lifeless.â
âGather as much data as you can without drawing their attention. Vas out.â Vas turned to Aithnea. âI hope weâve done enough to keep both you and us safe. Iâll be back in the morning.â
Aithnea had drifted to the computer pad in the wall. She was already calling up the library. âThank you.â
With a nod, Vas left the holosuite and locked it. A command lockout would keep any curious crew out. They needed to figure out if Aithnea had truly been the leak and how to catch it if it happened again.
She ran for the lift and almost smacked into Deven coming down a cross corridor. âLooks like your brother is easier to find than we thought. Any ideas of anything that might be in this system that might cause him to come here?â
Deven punched up the lift. âNot a thing. This system has been dead and abandoned longer than Iâve been alive. Heâs got something planned, or the people with him do.â
âThey could be looking for a place to hide. Especially if they know weâre after them.â Vas shrugged. Even she didnât believe that.
âNot in any world we know of. Heâs a bigger asshole than I thought. Just in case there was any question, if we need to kill him, Iâm okay with it. Iâll even break the news to my parents.â
Vas pulled back in surprise. âI didnât know they were still alive.â Sheâd spent six months alone with this man and felt like she didnât know him at all.
âYes, and they will be glad heâs gone too. They disowned him eighty years ago.â
The lift door opened to the command deck before she could ask more.
âAnything?â both Vas and Deven asked as they came on deck. Vas went to the pilot seat and Divee went to a science console.
